Expand Your Understanding of Remixing, Copyright, Fair Use and Plagiarism:

  • When musicians acknowledge another musician’s work in their remix/mashup, is this the same as citing a reference in your essay? Why or why not?
  • How does copyright protect original ideas? How does copyright stifle creative ideas?
  • Do most piracy lawsuits/copyright regulations protect the economic interests of production companies or the intellectual properties of artists?
  • How can learning about remixing help you understand copyright law and plagiarism?
  • What role has technology played in reshaping people's definitions about copyright and plagiarism?
  • Does the Internet make it easier or more tempting to plagiarize?
  • In this digital age, are you confused about the definitions of authorship and originality? Do you think that plagiarism needs to be redefined? How can teachers clarify this for students?

Challenge Yourself:
    • Find examples of remixed/mashed up videos, songs, art or writing that fall under fair use. Give specific reasons as to why they fall under fair use. Share these findings with your classmates.
    • Create your own remix/mashup using existing videos, images and audio tracks for a specific audience with a specific message. Explain why you think your remix/mashup does not infringe copyright law. Make sure you cite all your sources. Share your video with your classmates.
    • Find an online article about a current event that is about an issue related to copyright and/or fair use. Determine what the issue is and which side you think is correct based on your knowledge of copyright and fair use. Share this article with your classmates.
